1.  The Basics of Fire Fighting with Foam
To mechanically produce foam for the purpose of fire fighting, you will need the following :
       link.plus   Water flow
       link.plus   Foam concentrate
       link.plus   Dosing unit, to mix the concentrate with water into a :
       link.plus   Water/Foam solution
       link.plus   Foam generator, to add air into the water/foam solution to produce :

2.  The Function of Foam
Foam extinguishes and/or prevents fire mainly by the following methods:
       link.plus   Separating. Creates a barrier between the burning material/liquid and the fire/air
       link.plus   Cooling. Lowers the temperature of the burning material/liquid
       link.plus   Suppressing. Prevents the release of flammable vapors

3.  Foam Proportioning and Foam Generating
The proportioning and foam generating can be made according to the following example :
       link.plus   Water flow
       link.plus   Foam concentrate
       link.plus   Dosing unit for 3%, to mix the Foam concentrate with water into a :
       link.plus   Water/Foam solution, = 97% Water + 3% Foam concentrate.
       link.plus   Foam generator, three types to add air in three different ratios; Low-EX <20:1,
            Med-EX <200:1, High-EX <1000:1, to produce:
       link.plus   Foam
            a) Low expansion, long throw length, we.
            b) Medium expansion, medium throw length
            c) High expansion, no throw length, fills up spaces

4.  The Fundamental Philosophy
       link.plus   No external energy should be required, driven only by the existing water flow
       link.plus   Proportioning should be made automatic, i.e. the system should allow the firefighter to
            have the creativity free for fighting the fire
       link.plus   The system should be practically independent of changes in pressure and flow
            (within the min and max values)

5.  The Mechanical Principles
       link.plus   The hydraulic Water motor is driven by the water flow
       link.plus   The water motor drives the foam concentrate pump
       link.plus   Both units are of displacement type and linked mechanically with a direct drive.
            Displacement = Capacity/rev
       link.plus   The Foam concentrate pump follows the speed of the Water motor
       link.plus   The ratio between the displacements of the Foam concentrate pump and the Water
            motor will determine the nominal dosing rate
       link.plus   The above gives a practically constant dosing rate, regardless of changes in flow and
            pressure (within the min and max values)

Argonite Fixed Fire Suppression Systems

ARGONITE IS AN EXCELLENT FAST ACTING FIRE EXTINGUISHING AGENT

That is environmentally neutral, safe for occupied areas and leaves no residue. Argonite systems have been developed as a viable and environmentally friendly alternative for Halon. Tested and approved by regulatory bodies throughout the world, Argonite is effective against fires involving almost all combustible materials and flammable liquids and is particularly suitable for use in areas where the use of water, foam or powder would be unacceptable.

In a closed space almost all fires are extinguished in less than 60 seconds when the oxygen concentration falls below 15%. The Argonite fire extinguishing system, based on a mixture of 50% Argon and 50% Nitrogen, reduces the oxygen concentration to 12.5% – a level acceptable to human exposure over short periods – thus eliminating the fire quickly and effectively without affecting personnel.

Knowing the size and complexity of the area to be protected, the fire hazard present and the requirements of the local approving authority, a dedicated computer program is used to specify the size and geometry of the Argonite system hardware. Argonite is available in storage pressures up to 300 Bar, thus providing 30 per cent less storage space than any equivalent 200 Bar system.


The Argonite System

Argonite systems consist of one or more cylinders connected via a common manifold. System actuation can be manual or automatic and the gas is dispersed through a pipe network and enters the protected area via nozzles. Valve design, the size and pressure of the cylinders used together with computer calculated pipe and nozzle dimensions ensure that the correct amount of Argonite is released effectively. Argonite’s inerting and extinguishing properties act quickly to eliminate the fire. Where multiple area protection is required, and provided there is suitable fire separation, a central bank ‘multi-way’ system can be used. This provides a cost-effective solution by further reducing the overall cylinder quantity.

A range of cylinders is available offering a choice of fill and pressures to meet your specific needs and to ensure maximum cost effectiveness of the installation. Each cylinder is manufactured from high strength alloy steel and is supplied in accordance with the requirements of the various national authorities – inclusive of stamping and certification. They are mounted in rows and may be installed in any suitable location.

Made of corrosion resistant brass, Argonite discharge valves are designed to ensure optimum system performance, reduced pipe sizes and low installation costs.

An easy-to-read gauge enables convenient inspection of the agent pressure and a pressure switch is fitted as standard to allow remote monitoring of the system’s integrity.

AUTOMATIC FIRE PROTECTION WITH GASES (CO2) CARBON DIOXIDE


From the Natural Cycle
CO2, also known as carbon dioxide, occurs naturally; it is a colourless and odourless gas which does not conduct electricity. Its outstanding characteristic is that it does not reach with other substances, not does it leave any residue. This means that CO2is a clean extinguishing agent which is ideally suited to protecting highly sensitive risks against fire.

Stopping the Fire from "Breathing"
The extinguishing effect of CO2 is based on the displacement of oxygen, which is needed for the development of the fire. The normal proportion of oxygen in the air is approximately 21% by volume and adding CO2 reduces this to 15% or less by volume in the protected zone: as a result, any fire is quickly suffocated.

When our engineers design a CO2 extinguishing system, they make sure that storage is provided for the right amount of extinguishing agent. The amount determines whether the CO2 is stored at high pressure or low pressure.

High Pressure Storage
In high in steel bottles at ambient temperature. If necessary, bottles are grouped together to form large batteries. All the agent bottles are connected to a common manifold via high pressure hoses.

The high pressure method allows up to 50 kg of CO2 to be stored in each bottle. To ensure constant monitoring of the contents, each bottle is weighed and equipped with limit switches, so that a maximum leakage of 10% of the extinguishing agent gives an automatic signal and alarm.

In a system protecting several sections, special sectional valves ensure the supply of extinguishing agent to each section. This guarantees flooding just of the only area where extinguishing is required.
